Poker Gods League

TOM 2.0

Apr. 28, 2025

Well, it’s finally happened – something Tom said at PGL turned out to be true! He told me after last week’s victory that he would win again on Sunday, and he did. The frequency of his confident claims has yet to be matched in total results, but still – top of the league now!

It just goes to show that the power of positive thinking can sometimes coincide with a fortunate win. I’d like to join everyone else in some heartfelt congratulations – there’ll be no mention of blind squirrels being dealt the nuts from me. That would be Tom-petty (& possibly heart-breaking).

Personally, as happy as I am for our new league leader (grr) and his grr-8 run of form (the only run you’re ever likely to see him involved with), I miss the old Tom. I always enjoyed those times when he would inform me at the break that he had no chance, or when he walked out before the first hour of play was complete. But that’s not Tom any more.

Confident and assertive, it was clear to all that he was frequently being dealt monster starting hands, resulting in a sizeable chip-stack for most of the game. It’s not my place to moan about a comparative lack of decent hands (pocket 6s & a big slick) – many others have done that already, and it doesn’t change anything. I’m just going to keep showing up and wait for my turn to be jammy again.

However, when assessing anybody’s luck / skill ratio, 63 off beating AQ suited in the heads up final hand leaves us all sharing a common view. Not that I thought Tom was lucky – no, no, no. Who am I to downplay Tom’s abilities with such an accusation? I wouldn’t dream of mentioning it (mostly because I already had my fair share of luck earlier this year). I’m just wondering why Uggy limped in with his own top hand. Trapper Ug? I wasn’t there, so it will have to remain a mystery for now.

What is less mysterious is Tom’s intent to make it a hat-trick of wins next week. I’m hoping enough people care to try to stop him. And that they have the ability, the cards, and the luck to do so. I won’t be betting on the result, though, just waiting for the right chance.

Good luck, everyone! ** Hey everyone, due to the afore-mentioned circumstances, in this instance „everyone” may be a generalisation that doesn’t necessarily include each single player in the PGL, or their guests or other affiliates.

* Hey Tom, due to the afore-mentioned circumstances, not you.
