As we returned to our new theatre of dreams, one thing was on everybody’s minds (well, mine anyway). Robert was the new Daddy – how would he play with this new responsibility hanging over him? The answer was much the same as always – irresponsibly (well, it is Holdem).
We were all happy for Robert, but we were all determined not to let sentiment stand in the way. Nine other players, ready to kick parenthood and any other good vibes to the rail – especially when there’s a train coming!
The usual aggressive play from Robert served him well – at least until people started calling him. Eventually he went all-in with some baby cards, and Steve’s ace paired to send him home early.
Maya kept it tight all game and wound up pushing with not-quite suited connectors (75h). Sean’s higher not-quite suited connectors (AQs) held to send her home in 9th.
The carnage continued when Ug (A9h) was dominating Sean’s Q9d. Regular readers will understand that with only a Q or a flush to save him, Sean’s lady would obviously make an appearance to upset the odds.
Next Janne picked up KQc, and with no obvious bet to fear, pushed all-in. It was a trap, and Steve called with KK, which tripped and sent Janne home in 7th.
Pretty soon, players had to start making moves, and Hadley chose Q9 to push. Again, Steve had a decent hand – a big slick in diamonds, which held. AK also looked good to Tom, but Sean had the ladies on his side and they were golden. Talk about bad luck…
Speaking of bad luck, dominating another player (in this case, KT vs K9) is usually a good thing. Barring a straight or flush, there are only 3 outs for the opponent. Jake probably felt good, but Oskar hit his lucky 9 to scalp last week’s „head” scalper.
But when Oskar picked up that lucky 9 again with a bullet, he ran straight into the all-conquering QQ, which this time Steve was holding. The requisite 3-outer failed to materialise, but Oskar took a creditable 3rd place.
Heads up, Sean needed to redress the (im-)balance of the stacks against Mr. Lucky7-McShamrock-Horseshoe-BlackCat-FourLeafClover. But with Q8, those girls were bound to defend their sister, and Steve tripped over the winning line with the ladies.
It all goes to show the old adage is true – lucky at cards, unlucky in love. By that metric, my exes should all be professional poker players. Congratulations to this week’s real winner! Robert is the Daddy.
